Position Statement

Position Statement

A highly creative individual with an educational background in graphic design. I enjoy generating new and lasting memorable ideas and learning how to problem solve. I am a
self –motivated, goal-orientated and determined person with a high degree of resourcefulness and flexibility.

Currently working as a freelance illustrator between studies past projects, creating Illustrative album covers for music artists within the United Kingdom and America. Business logo designs and newly developed clothing brands along individual creative poster portraits

In the future, I hope to work as an Illustrator and pursue my passion as a Graphic novelist, creating my own series of graphic novels. I aspire to work for a company that provides me with the opportunity to explore, excel and develop my creative vision and a deeper understanding of graphic design.

From the beginning of this personal project I had no idea of what my business logo or name of my business was going to be. I was also unclear on what line of work I was going to be doing with in the art industry, deciding between Graphic illustration and Animation, I personally feel that my skills are found within animating and illustrating so I have decided to go down the route of illustration, but want to continue animating in my spare time to help promote my business. I think using both skills allows me to be diverse with my work and I can express myself through visuals and movement. I currently freelance and receive a lot of my work from Instagram, many people from the United states are interested in my work. I Specialise in creating Illustrative visuals for Album covers, posters, logos and banners, during working as a freelancer I have built many connects and friends which I now keep in contact with for work and up and coming projects.

Personally I do not want to continue freelancing because the earning of money is not very consistent or continuous because sometimes there are not many clients often. I want to find a good illustration Studio which pays me to do what I enjoy, I want to earn good amounts of money and build an experience to help start my own business because I am planning to create my own clothing brand, I have already registered my logo for 10 years and I now have money to invest in some T-shirt prints. There are already set designs that will go on the T-shirts but I have not decided to print them yet because there are decisions to be made on pricing. The plan is to release a few T-shirts this summer and have them delivered worldwide to people who are interested in my brand. My objective is to become well known like e.g. Adidas, Nike, Stussy, Supreme, Huf and many others.

Work on this brief has taught me a lot about preparing myself for working as a professional artist by pushing to work outside my comfort zone. I have been made to research and investigate important facts and bits of information to help develop me as an artist. Creating things which are symbolic to me, my logo name being Malachite which is close to my name Malachi, Over the years I struggled to come up with a name so I did researched into other brand like e.g. Lacoste, Huf and others where I found out that these logos were not only just names but had means and a strong links to the owner or the motto of the brand. So I decided to use Malachite because it is a nickname people used to give or sometimes told me it closely resembled my name because it had the same spelling and pronunciation.

Portraits

The drawings above are of friends from Korea who paid me to draw them, they liked my style of drawing and wanted images which were very abstract and representative of them and their personality through colour and style, £50 per drawing.

Where's Zico (single) Cover

I still receive a lot of freelance work for album covers from music artist, I recently met an artist on Instagram called Zico a rapper and beat maker from Newcastle who specialises in a genre called Lo-fi HipHop. He told me the name of his new single was called "Where's Zico" and that he just wanted his cover to be artistic, it could be anything. My idea was to develop image of childlike hands and x on a map of Britain with dotted lines, I planned to cross of Newcastle on the image as clever reference in relation to the Music artist and his location, but this looked untidy so I settled for the yellow drawn pattern above. He likes the art and stated that I will be designing more cover art for him in the future.

Show reel

I feel that I don't have enough good work for a show reel, the only piece I really like is my final but all the other pieces I feel are not good enough to be shown because I developed them at a time when I was still developing as an animator and non of my pieces in the past I feel are worth showing to anyone. I am going to pic a few which I think are not too bad to use for a showreel, this is my developed showreel below.

I have been give a Job by an up and coming music artist on Instagram, He has a banner which needs redesigning, currently looks very basic so he wants an iconic image as well as text as a symbol of him. I have decided to create a dragon to symbolise him as a music producer. He likes the suggested idea so I am going to go through with creating this idea. I will charge £150 because this going to take a day to create.

The final out come will be placed below...

The idea behind the design of the logo was to make it look bright, bold and fashionable because the colours black and gold were what the client, they wanted the logo to look rich and bright. I have been told by the client that I am to be the designer for the clothing brand because he really likes my work and wants me to collaborate with him he has paid me £70 for this logo and will go on to pay me for my contribution to his brand, we have had many discussions and work is under way.

Networking and building my status

Working on a portrait for a Taiwanese girl on Instagram I have done this for recognition to build followers and establish my self as an freelance illustrator, I am charging £30 for this job because is a small portrait.

Freelance work for a client

I received more work from another client the other day asking me to design his company logo, I have charged him £150 and am currently working with him because he is able to bring me more clients who I can potentially work with to earn more money.

This is a business owned by my client called water, who wanted a specific colour scheme of yellow, orang and white because it need to match the theme of his shop which was yellow based and these are all close colours which work with one another.

My Art Career

I have thought about my career as a freelancer and I have set firm on picking this path because is a business opportunity to make money for my self. I personally have always wanted my own business, creating my logo and registering it for the clothing sector was only the beginning, perviously I have already freelanced and earned a substantial amount of money for my profession, charging £150 per day. I would like to build on this and gain new contacts who need design work to help build my business so that I can start putting money into printing t-shirts and building my own clothing line. I have chosen this path because I want to make a name for my self, I want people to know me as an artist because of my originality in the way I design and the different approaches I use to design.

Working for some I personally think is pointless to me, personally I think employees just use you to absorb your talent to build their own business, you don't really serve a purpose to them you could just be considered as another work slave to a growing business which you don't personally own. I have read books which have inspired me to build my own business e.g. Rich Dad Poor Dad which followed a story of the author Robert Kiyosaki who tells the story about how his dad was a very well educated man that work for system and ending up in the rat race cycle of trying to sustain his family, house and money. The author talks about how he learnt about business by talking to his friends father who was a millionaire and taught him the importance of building his own business as a young child.

The book has taught a lot about building something for my self in order to earn good amounts of money for doing what I love and not earning peanuts for my hard earned work. I still continue to grow my business on Instagram finding new clients and building my work.

Job choice

1.) I am currently thinking of where to work in the future because I am struggling to make a decision between becoming a freelancer or working part-time for a company. Main factors are that being a freelancer will allow me to be my own boss and gives me an opportunity to build my own clientele, earning my own money will also allow me to build upon expanding the business I already have. On the other side, I am also debating on working for someone and earning a wage.

2.) The negatives I am considering are based on my income, freelancing is based on finding work and I am not sure whether I would earn enough to keep my business sustained or a roof over my head. Work for a company could also be a problem because I don't want to earn less in wage than what I could potentially turn over in term of profit if I work for my self.

3.) My objective now is to go through some options, research potential studios and freelancing opportunities online. Even though I am not entirely sure about either of my options, maybe combing both could help, work for someone whilst free lancing will mean that I can earn money from holding down a job in concept design or Illustration whilst carrying on with my own business to build my own business and income. Eventually, when my personal business is will grow meaning that I can leave my current job and work on something of my own.

These are some freelancing jobs I have been currently looking at, I really want to freelancing. I just need to make sure I pick jobs which pay a good amount for the work I do.
